SCNU hosted the first International Symposium on China-Timor-Leste Cooperation and Development from December 1 to 2. More than 70 experts, scholars and representatives of institutes from countries and regions including Timor-Leste (East Timor), Australia, Portugal, Malaysia, Macao and the Chinese mainland attended the symposium.

Yang Zhongmin, president of SCNU pointed out that the Timor-Leste Research Center of SCNU is the only ministerial-level research base of a Chinese university directly named after Timor-Leste and conducts research on Timor-Leste. It is also a high-end think tank for Timor-Leste research under the Belt and Road initiative. The symposium focuses on the cooperation and development between China and Timor-Leste and gathers related experts and scholars at home and abroad, being of great significance to deepen people-to-people exchange between the two countries.
João Soares Martins, president of UNTL, shares his appreciation and expectations.
João Soares Martins, president of Universidade Nacional Timor Lorosa’e (UNTL), recalled the history of cooperation and exchanges between Timor-Leste and China, expressing gratitude for China’s long-term support and assistance. He pointed out that UNTL was established in the year 2000, but its history traces back to 1986. UNTL is now looking forward to promoting cooperation with Chinese higher education institutions in the fields of education, art and humanities.
Luo Lin , director of Regional and Country Studies Bases Secretariat, details his opinions.
Luo Lin, director of the Country and Regional Research Secretariat under the Ministry of Education (MOE), pointed that the study on Timor-Leste could offer insights into broader and significant issues, not only holding academic value, but also bearing on the long-term goals of regional peace and global cooperation. He also addressed that the Timor-Leste Research Center of SCNU, as the only think tank dedicated to the study of Timor-Leste in China, has made outstanding contributions in interdisciplinary reasearch on history, culture, and education of Timor-Leste.
SCNU and UNTL sign a MoU.
SCNU and UNTL signed an interschool memorandum of understanding. Huafa Group from Zhuhai and the University of Saint Joseph in Macao signed co-operation agreements with UNTL as well.
During the keynote report session, experts and institutional representatives presented and discussed various topics, such as the Timor-Leste Research Association, the development of UNTL, the current state and challenges of higher education in Timor-Leste, transitions in Southeast Asia, cooperation between Macau and Timor-Leste in higher education, and Macao's role in fostering collaboration between China and Timor-Leste.
Experts deliver speeches at the seminar.
After the keynote speeches, two seminars with the themes of “Cooperation and Communication between China and Timor-Leste”, and “The Relationship between Timor-Leste and other countries” were held. Scholars from China and other countries expressed their ideas.
Ma Zaoming, director of Research Center for Timor-Leste, concluded the symposium. Although it was the first time to hold the symposium, the in-depth exchange of views and intellectual discussions were inclusive, open, and wide-ranging as the socio-economic development of Timor-Leste, cooperation and exchange, and Timor-Leste's relationships with major powers were reviewed.
The symposium was held by SCNU, UNTL and the Center for Timor-Leste Studies. It was organized by the School of Education, the Office of International Exchange & Cooperation, the Commission of Comparative Education, and the Guangdong Association of Higher Education.
