The "China's National Day and Macao’s Return to the Motherland Collaborative Concert," co-organized by the Faculty of Innovation and Design (FIAD) at the City University of Macau (CityU) and the School of Music at the South China Normal University (SCNU), was staged yesterday at Cultural Centre on the Taipa campus.
CityU Professor Dai Dingcheng, a renowned musicologist and composition theorist, along with Professor Kong Yilong, dean of SCNU School of Music, served as academic advisors and arts directors for the music event. The grand concert aimed to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland, offering the audience a cultural experience that emphasized the resonance and cultural integration of higher music institutions in Guangdong and Macao.
The concert was attended by government officials, music professionals, representatives of the music associations, University leaders, faculty members, teachers, and students of higher education and high schools. They were Xu Dongjie, director of Department of Publicity and Culture of Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR; Tam Sio Wa, head of the Division of Tertiary Educational Cooperation and Exchange of the SAR Government Education and Youth Development Bureau; Kong Yilong, dean of the School of Music of South China Normal University; Chan Lei Lei, director of Macao Conservatory; Zhou You, director of the Musicians Committee of Federation of Associations of Cultural Sectors of Macau; Pun Chi Meng, CityU’s honorary doctor and general secretary of Caritas Macau; Kong Fanqing, vice chairwoman of University Council; Rector Jun Liu; Council Member Cintia Chan; University Consultant Ip Peng Kin; FIAD Executive Associate Dean Wang Po-Hsun; Professor Dai Dingcheng.

Rector Jun Liu warmly welcomed the faculty members and students at South China Normal University in his remarks. He emphasized the collaborative effort of both universities in hosting this concert, as well as the internationally renowned SCNU Choir. He introduced the songs and celebratory musical works performed by faculty and students, aiming to present the achievements of the music programs at both universities and convey best wishes for this special year. He hoped that the two universities would work together to strengthen cultural cooperation between Guangdong and Macao, promote music culture, and tell China’s stories by leveraging Macao’s advantages as a "City of East Asia Culture."
This concert was part of the “CityU Macau & SCNU Celebrating China’s National Day and Macao’s Return to the Motherland Collaborative Concert and Guangdong and Macao Musicology Doctoral Forum” Series. It was jointly planned by professionals from the two universities and featured Ph.D. students in Arts (Musicology) program at CityU along with students from the School of Music of South China Normal University. The event aimed to deepen exchanges and cooperation between Guangdong and Macao in music research, practice, performance, further promoting the prosperity and development of regional music culture.
This concert featured a diverse array of musical pieces, capturing the essence of Chinese and Western instruments, and combining rigor and elegance of classical music and energy and liveliness of Chinese folk music. The performances were presented in a rich variety of forms, including solos, choruses, solo performances, and ensembles, showcasing the diverse integration and unique charm of musical art.
During the concert, special performances of the commemorative songs “Building Your Dreams in Macau” and “Macau, a Beautiful Place,” composed by Professor Dai Dingcheng with lyrics by Assistant Professor Chan Ka Hou, were presented. These pieces, with their profound musical attainment, highlight Macao’s culture and convey the heartfelt wishes of artists from Guangdong and Macao for the reunification of the motherland and the bright future of Macao.
