Professor Pēteris Pildegovičs has been conferred an honorary doctorate degree by South China Normal University. A ceremony was held at the Shipai campus, where SCNU president Wang Enke awarded him the honorary degree.

Dr. Pēteris Pildegovičs said that receiving an honorary doctorate from SCNU was a great privilege. Dr. Pēteris Pildegovičs has been engaged in Chinese language learning and teaching as well as Sino-Latvian friendly exchange for more than half a century. He also stated that China was his second home and SCNU was his second university. Under the close cooperation between SCNU and the University of Latvia, Dr. Pēteris Pildegovičs and the Confucius Institute at the University of Latvia will continue to teach Chinese language and culture in Latvia, and to dedicate themselves to cultural and educational exchange and cooperation between China and Latvia.

At the ceremony, president Wang Enke expressed his heartfelt congratulations to Prof. Pēteris Pildegovičs and pointed out that Prof. Pēteris Pildegovičs was one of the first group of famous diplomats, contributing to the normalization and the development of friendly diplomatic relations between China and Latvia. He was the most famous sinologist and Chinese language teaching leader after the restoration of Latvia's independence, advancing sinology research and Chinese teaching in Latvia. He was also the founder and the dean of the Confucius Institute at the University of Latvia, nurturing talents across various disciplines and fields in Latvia.
Wang added, this year also marked the 10th anniversary of the "Belt and Road" initiative and Latvia has been an important participant in the "Belt and Road" co-construction. Prof. Pēteris Pildegovičs has personally promoted cultural and educational exchange between China and Latvia, building bridges for Latvians to understand China and for Chinese people to understand Latvia. He has made outstanding contributions to "Belt and Road" people-to-people communication.
At the same time, president Wang Enke said that the Honorary Doctorate degree awarded to Pēteris Pildegovičs is not only the first conferred by SCNU, but also the first conferred by a provincial university in Guangdong province. It is an honor for Prof. Pēteris Pildegovičs as well as for SCNU. Finally, president Wang hoped that under the leadership of Prof. Pēteris Pildegovičs, the Confucius Institute at the University of Latvia will continue to thrive, and the enduring friendship between China and Latvia will perpetuate.

Vice president Yang Zhongmin read out the Notice of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council on the Granting of the Honorary Doctorate Degree to Pēteris Pildegovičs. Then, he invited president Wang, as the Chairman of the Academic Degree Evaluation Committee and President of SCNU, to wear the ribbon, perform the tassel ceremony, and award the Honorary Doctorate Degree Certificate to Dr. Pēteris Pildegovičs. After the ceremony, President Wang Enke exchanged souvenirs with Dr. Pēteris Pildegovičs on behalf of SCNU, and Ms. Tan Weihong, director of the Management Office of Confucius Institute of SCNU, presented flowers to Dr. Pēteris Pildegovičs.
