SCNU has been awarded funding for a total of 124 projects, according to the acceptance results for 2023 announced by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) on August 24.

The number of SCNU projects that have been approved and will receive funding increased by 25.25% against the same period last year, while the overall approval rate is 25.7% higher than the national average of about 16.1%. Direct funding for SCNU projects reached about 62.6 million yuan. Thus, for five years consecutively funding has exceeded 60 million yuan. As a result, SCNU ranks third among all normal universities in the country.

The approved projects consist of 3 key programs, 3 projects that won the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 71 general programs, 46 projects sponsored by the Young Scientists Fund and 1 project listed on the Major Research Plan.

The statistics suggest that the number of general programs and projects with the Young Scientists Fund rose significantly. Specifically, the approval rate for the Young Scientists Fund reached 31.7%, while that for general programs reached 26.3%, respectively 15 and 10 points higher than the national average.

Also, the projects supported by the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars maintained the momentum. Fourteen young scholars have received money from the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars since the school became a member of the National Sponsoring Project for World-Class Disciplines Construction in 2017. Of these, 8 are in the descipline of Physics.

The funding covers projects at 21 schools across SCNU. The School of Studies in Fundamental Education on the Shanwei campus won the Young Scientists Fund within two years of its establishment.

Eight departments are currently funded. The Department of Life Sciences receives 28 grants with direct funding of 12.6 million yuan; the Department of Mathematical Sciences receives 24 grants with direct funding of 13.5 million yuan; the Department of Earth Science receives 24 grants with direct funding of 10.2 million yuan; the Department of Information Science is funded for 21 projects with direct funding of nearly 12.6 million yuan. These are the top-3 ranking departments of SCNU.

The 3 approved key programs are of the Department of Chemical Science and of the Department of Information Sciences. Meanwhile, the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars goes to 3 projects at the Department of Engineering and Materials Sciences and the Department of Mathematical Sciences.

In recent years, SCNU has made the promotion of fundamental research advancing organized scientific research the school's overall goal. Following the recommendations of the leadership of the CPC SCNU Committee, SCNU will continue to improve the administration and organization of science funds as well as foster innovation in fundamental research.
