The 2023 International Chinese Language Education Southern Forum and working meeting for the development of the International Chinese Education Cooperation Mechanism of Guangdong Province commenced at SCNU on August 26, 2023. The event was hosted by SCNU and undertaken by the Southern Union of International Chinese Language Education.
International Chinese language education is a significant way to enhance the influence of Chinese civilization and effectively narrate China’s stories. The meeting adhered to the spirit of the 20th Report of the Communist Party of China, with a mission to conduct an interdisciplinary and cross-domain exploration of the theoretical development and teaching practice of international Chinese language education. Its focus is to accelerate the development of the disciplinary, academic and discourse systems of Philosophy and Social Sciences with Chinese characteristics, and cultivate more talents in philosophy and the social sciences. More than 200 experts, scholars and international Chinese language education teachers from China and many Southeast Asian countries participated in the forum.
Wang Enke, president of SCNU, indicated that the School of Chinese Language Teacher Education for Southeast Asia, the first teacher school on a global scale, jointly set up by SCNU and the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC), was making continuous efforts to demonstrate and lead the high-quality and sustainable development of international Chinese language education.
Zhu Chaohua, of the Department of Education of Guangdong province, said that the Department of Education of Guangdong province was willing to cooperate with CLEC and the School of Chinese Language Teacher Education for Southeast Asia of SCNU, to jointly promote the development of the international Chinese language education cooperation mechanism of Guangdong province.
Wang Yong, director of the Office of Development and Planning of CLEC, delivered a special report, entitled The Innovation and Development of International Chinese Language Education under the New Situation. He indicated that with the concerted efforts of all parties, the development of the cooperation mechanism would improve and contribute to the international Chinese language education career.
Wu Jian, vice president of SCNU, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to colleagues who have shown enduring concern and support for the development of international Chinese language education over a long period of time. He acknowledged the achievements in recent years regarding disciplinary, academic and discourse systems. However, he also recognized the existence of many problems and challenges that need to be solved. He hopes colleagues will put forward new strategies for the high-quality development of international Chinese language education, provide new ideas for the development of the Greater Bay Area and the needs of national development strategies, and contribute new wisdom to promoting the development of human civilization.
Then, 38 experts and scholars, representatives of the Southern Union of International Chinese Language Education and from Hong Kong, Macao, and some Southeast Asian countries, made reports on several topics, focusing on the institutionalized and systematic development of international Chinese language education in the new era.
SCNU, as the secretariat of the mechanism, is committed to achieving in-depth and integrated development with CLEC and the Department of Education of Guangdong Province in discipline construction, talent training and other aspects. Additionally, SCNU is continually promoting closer international Chinese language education cooperation in Guangdong province and actively building an International Chinese Language Education model with Guangdong characteristics and another one with Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area characteristics.
The International Chinese Language Education Cooperation Mechanism of Guangdong Province, organized by the Department of Education of Guangdong Province and CLEC, is a professional mechanism established by research institutes from Guangdong Province engaging in the research and teaching of the International Chinese language career.
