At the beginning of the meeting, Yang Zhongmin, vice president of SCNU, recalled the establishment of the Institut Confucius de La Réunion, and highly appreciated contributions Université de la Réunion has made over the past 12 years. As for the future development of the Confucius Institute on Réunion and further cooperation between the two universities, Yang extended his hope “to adjust teaching projects for the better implementation of teaching requirements next year and add more elements of SCNU into its various cultural activities.”

In addition, Yang said that he hopes the institute could act as a bridge to carry out relevant activities and projects for the 90th anniversary of SCNU next year and the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Sino-French diplomatic ties by 2024, thus promoting language and cultural exchange between China and France.

Anne-Françoise Zattara, vice president of the Université de la Réunion briefly introduced faculty members of the Institut Confucius de La Réunion before welcoming the institute’s newly appointed Chinese director Zhou Xiaolan and two Chinese teachers, Guo Ziyang and Yao Jinling, who assumed their roles last August. She also thought highly of the significant role the Institut Confucius de La Réunion plays in Chinese language education on Réunion.

As the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Sino-French diplomatic ties approaches, Zattara suggests the Institut Confucius de La Réunion could try out more cultural activities and cooperative projects for the coming year, in order to deepen the cooperation and communication between the Université de la Réunion and SCNU.

During the meeting, Zhou Xiaolan (the Chinese director), Aline Kwan (the French director) and Marjolaine Roche (former general director) reported on the work summary for 2022 and projects planned in 2023 respectively. In 2022, the Institut Confucius de La Réunion basically resumed classroom teaching, steadily launched Chinese cultural activities and completed the planned work successfully.

Aline Kwan reports on the cultural activities over 2022.

Established in 2010, the Institut Confucius de la Réunion is a European overseas Confucius institute with the status of a secondary school directly affiliated to the Université de la Réunion and SCNU. In 2017, the institute was honored as "the World's Leading Confucius Institute" for its outstanding performance.

The Institut Confucius de La Réunion offers services to the university and local community. Among these are Chinese courses for undergraduate and postgraduate English majors at the Université de la Réunion. In 2020, it set up a bachelor’s degree in Applied Chinese and English Languages of the “Chinese + Major” model, which achieved good efficiency and laid a solid foundation for further development.
