The project of Professor Xiao Xianjing of the Institute for Science, Technology and Society at SCNU, to write a monograph was listed among the major projects for philosophy and social science research. Funded by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in 2022, Professor Xiao will receive a grant of 200,000 yuan for the later stage of the research project.
A total of 101 projects were approved this year, of which only 24 are deemed landmark achievements of great academic value. Professor Xiao’s monograph History of Scientific Thought -- Transformation of Natural Outlook, Innovation of Methodology and Scientific Revolution is one of the major projects in that category.
It is a study of the connotations with, and changes of the views on nature in various stages of human history, as well as the methodological changes and scientific ways of understanding revolution. In the first part, it describes the relationship between mythology and religious views of nature of prehistoric peoples and their natural cognition. Then, it sorts out the main content and scientific thought of ancient Greek natural philosophy. Thirdly, it clarifies the relevance of medieval natural philosophy, natural theology and the development of the early modern natural sciences. Next, it expounds the transformation of the view of nature, the innovation of methodology and their relation in the modern scientific revolution. It looks ahead to the further, new development of modern science, new changes in views of nature and methodological innovation. Finally, it proposes the concept of a new form of scientific revolution that is beneficial to both environmental protection and the economy.
Back-funded projects are divided into major projects and general projects. The MOE funds nearly completed academic achievements in fundamental research and applied research in philosophy and the social sciences. These may include literature reviews, translated works, monographs and reference books. The supported achievements should be basically completed at a level of more than 70% and should have not yet been unpublished. The grant to major project is 200,000 yuan, and the grant to general projects is 100,000 yuan.
In recent years, SCNU has adopted a guideline of “organized scientific research” in the field of philosophy and the social sciences. From various subject areas with solid foundation, SCNU selects research interests and preliminary results with great potential for theoretical innovation and with broad application prospects. Then, SCNU prioritises these based on a hierarchical classification. The funding from MOE to the project is a testament to the efforts of SCNU in attaining social science achievements.
