The International Symposium on "Building China-Brunei Strategic Partnership: Opportunities and Paths for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area" was held at SCNU on September 17, aiming to forge better synergy between the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and Brunei, cultivate new sources of growth and promote regional cooperation.
Scholars at home and abroad join and contribute to the meeting on line.
Wu Jian, vice president of SCNU, addressed the participants with an opening speech. He said that Sino-Brunei economic, cultural and educational cooperation have yielded fruitful results over the years. As the golden age of Region and Country Studies has come, Chinese scholars are expected to know more about the world, especially their neighbors, in order to promote the spirit of "harmony in diversity". The seminar provides a platform for in-depth dialogue that may help further the prospective cooperation between the Greater Bay Area and Brunei, he said.
Su Caifang, vice chairman of the Guangdong International Culture Exchange Center, said she expected the symposium to be a precious opportunity to enhance communication between scholars from both sides in related fields in line with the spirit of the talks between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brunei's Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.
Given that strategic partnerships between the Greater Bay Area and Brunei have been formed in maritime, environmental protection, energy, financial services and many other fields since the Belt and Road Initiative was launched, she hoped the symposium would further promote exchange of ideas, and thoughts sharing on the BRI and Brunei’s Wawasan Brunei 2035 economic strategy, as well as win-win cooperation and mutual development.

He shared Brunei's history, culture and customs with the participants, interpreted the historical origin of Brunei's monarchy and talked about China-Brunei people-to-people exchanges from both archaeological and historical angles. He pointed out that he looked forward to a promising future of Sino-Brunei cooperation as relations between the two countries had entered a new phase.

The meeting also included two discussion sessions: "China-Brunei Relations from a Regional Perspective: Development Opportunities and Cooperation Paths" and "Brunei and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in the Context of the Belt and Road Initiative: New Roles and Opportunities for the Chinese Diaspora" respectively. Scholars and experts from nonprofit and educational institutions from both countries such as the China Foreign Affairs University, Xiamen University, Sun Yat-Sen University and the Universiti Brunei Darussalam as well as the Association of Chinese Enterprises in Brunei shared their views on relevant topics.
The symposium was co-organized by the School of Chinese Language Teacher Education for Southeast Asia and the Center for Southeast Asian Studies of SCNU as well as the Guangdong International Culture Exchange Center.
SCNU has a longstanding commitment to promoting international and regional cooperation and exchange under the spirit of the Belt and Road Initiative. The Center for Southeast Asian Studies and the School of Chinese Language Teacher Education for Southeast Asia, the first school of this kind, were set up in 2017 and 2021 respectively, aiming to promote regional and country studies and cultural exchange and cooperation. A series of themed activities, such as the Southeast Asia Forum, have been held on a regular basis.
