The SCNU project “Mathematical Theory of Elastic Navier-Stokes Equations” has received 3 million yuan in funding support from the 2021 National Key R&D Program for Young Scientists.

Led by Professor Wang Yong of the School of Mathematical Sciences, the project focuses on the study of a class of basic Oldroyd-B type elastic NS equation systems, aiming to establish a theory of large solutions of elastic NS equation systems. With that, the mathematical theory of viscoelastic fluid mechanics equation systems will be strengthened. It also provides a theoretical basis for some physical phenomena of viscoelastic fluids (e.g. rod climbing effect, and tubeless siphon phenomenon) and for related numerical calculations, providing reference for the study of related mathematical problems of complex fluids.

With the rapid development of modern industrial society, a large number of viscoelastic fluids in the category of non-Newtonian fluids have emerged, and the classical Navier-Stokes (NS) equations are no longer applicable. However, the mathematical theory research of the equations lags far behind the classical NS equations, especially the work on large initial value solutions is almost blank. In view of this problem, the team’s research focus is on the study of a kind of basic Oldroyd-B elastic NS equations.

SCNU’s project is among a total of 29 projects to receive support in the field of mathematics and applied mathematical research in the country, and it’s also the first National Young Scientist project at the School of Mathematical Sciences. The project leader, Professor Wang Yong joined SCNU in 2019 and has published 20 SCI papers in mathematics in international academic journals such as SIAM J. Math. Anal., and J. Differential Equations.

According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Key R&D Program of China for Young Scientists aims to cultivate young talents in the field of basic research. It opens special support channels for the outstanding young talents who are dedicated to research, and accelerate the cultivation of the young leading talents with great influence in the international frontier fields.
