The signing ceremony of establishment of the School of Chinese Language Teacher Education for Southeast Asia, the world’s first international Chinese language teacher training institute, was held at the Southeast Asia Forum at SCNU on 13 November 2021.

This school is jointly set up by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation of the Ministry of Education and SCNU. On behalf of the two sides, Wang Enke, president of SCNU and Ma Jianfei, director of the Center, signed the agreement on the establishment of the school in attendance of nearly 2,000 people in China and elsewhere around the world, who could follow the cermony through live-streaming.
The ceremony is hosted by Yang Zhongmin, vice president of SCNU.

He stated that establishing this school for Southeast Asia aimed at providing consultancy services as a think tank,cultivating high-level international talents in interdisciplinary fields of "Chinese language + Professional" , "Chinese language + Industry" and "Southeast Asian Studies" and training high-level international Chinese language teachers. Besides, more theoretical and special research on international Chinese teacher education as well as language exchange and cooperation will be carried out by the school.
Yang also mentioned that the establishment of the school comes in response to the national strategic objectives in enriching the connotation of the China-ASEAN Community of Destiny. The school will be dedicated to founding a new platform for the promotion of international Chinese language education along the Belt and Road, building a new fulcrum for national and regional Chinese language education research in Southeast Asia. It can provide more possibilities and opportunities for the exchange and cooperation in the area of Chinese education between China and other Southeast Asian countries, which is of great significance in promoting high-quality and sustainable development of international Chinese language education, he said.
Gao Huangwei, director of the Research Office of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at SCNU said that the institute would recruit Southeast Asian students with master and doctor degree and provide them with Chinese language education to increase the quality of local Chinese language teachers in Southeast Asia. In Gao's view, being exposed to Chinese language education and Chinese culture, students can have a more comprehensive and better understanding of China. In this way, they can integrate their knowledge of Chinese well with the local culture from their countries. And thus better popularize Chinese internationally.

According to the agreement and the development plan of the school, the school of Chinese Language Teacher Education for Southeast Asia will give full play to the academic advantages of SCNU. It is committed to building a high-quality Chinese communication system in Southeast Asia, and strengthening the training of high-level international Chinese and ASEAN talents. Furthermore, it may contribute to the development of enterprises in China and other countries along the Belt and Road and enhance a closer China-ASEAN community with a shared future.
