Thirty first-level disciplines of SCNU were selected into the 2021 Best Chinese Subjects Ranking, according to the 2021 edition released by a Shanghai Ranking Consultancy on October 25.
There are four subjects in the top 5%, seven subjects in the top 20%, seven subjects in the top 30% and eight subjects in the top 50% according to the 2021 Best Chinese Subjects Ranking. With that, SCNU ranks the 4th among Chinese teacher training universities, the 4th among universities in Guangdong, and the 22nd among Chinese universities. Compared with the year 2020, SCNU's disciplines show two general characteristics:
First, the traditional preponderant subjects stay ahead. For example, four subjects are stably in the top 5% of Chinese universities, namely Psychology, Sports Science, Education and Marxist Theory. Among them, Psychology and Sports Science rank 3rd in China, while Education and Marxist Theory respectively rank 7th and 12th on a national scale. Geography, Software Engineering, Physics, Philosophy, Chinese Language and Literature, Mathematics and Biology are in the top 20% subjects. The total number of SCNU disciplines in the top 20% increased by three compared with the previous year.
Secondly, keeping a steady ranking. 93.3% of disciplines rank flat or up this year. Nine rankings of subjects have moved up and 19 stand tied. Some subjects have risen rapidly in rank, such as Public Administration, Chinese Language and Literature, Foreign Languages and Literature, Chemistry, Biology, Music and Dance, Theoretical Economics, Electronic Science and Technology, Fishery Science.
Shanghai Ranking is an authoritative evaluation organization in China. Since its first release in 2017, its ranking has found recognition in society. The evaluation index system of this ranking includes the performance of the discipline in talent cultivation, research projects, achievement awards, academic papers, and high-end talents. The latest 2021 Best Chinese Subjects Ranking includes 96 first-level disciplines, involving thousands of disciplines at nearly 500 universities in China.
