Zhang Weiguang, a professor from the School of Chemistry of SCNU, won the China Industry-University-Research Collaboration and Innovation Achievement Award recently, according to the announcement issued by the China Industry-University-Research Institute Collaboration Association.
Professor Zhang Weiguang
Professor Zhang is credited with his solutions to solving the issue of chirality. Since the Thalidomide tragedy in the 1950s, the issue of chirality has become increasingly important in the fields of novel drug development and pharmaceutical research. Enantiomers may exhibit different pharmacologic, pharmacokinetic, metabolic, and toxicological activity in living organisms. Professor Zhang and his team have been working to improve the standards and ways of detecting chiral pharmaceuticals through Industry-University-Research integration over the past decade.
Based on the school platform for fundamental research, he set up an academician-led workstation and postdoctoral base for practice and innovation in enterprise. By the way of industry-university-research cooperation, Zhang’s team developed chiral High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) technology combined with chiroptical spectroscopy that has been widely used in separation and analysis of chiral compounds, and will play a critical role in the detection and quality control of chiral pharmaceuticals, thus realizing industrialization with the assistance of pharmaceutical companies. With that, Professor Zhang and his team broke the foreign monopoly, enabling Chinese pharmaceutical companies applying this technique to rack up more than one hundred million yuan before taxing.

Professor Zhang and his team have won a series of awards in this field, including the second prize of Science Research Famous Achievement Award in Higher Institution (Science & Technology) in 2019, the Excellent Enterprise Award in the third China Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition in 2014, the third prize in the second Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition in Zhujiang and the grand prize in Technology Innovation and Promotion Award (applied technology) in Zhuhai in 2020.
Established by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China and the National Office for Science & Technology Awards, the China Industry-University-Research Collaboration and Innovation Achievement Award is the first nation-wide award in recognition of contributions that firms, universities, institutes and individuals make in the field of industry-university-research cooperation. The award comprises four categories: the award for innovation, the award for promotion, the award for achievement of innovation and the award for great contribution. No more than 40 individuals may win the award for innovation each year.
