"Southeast Asia Forum" is held from 14–15 November 2020

Under the theme of “Regional Cooperation and Collaborative Innovation under the Reconstruction of Global Governance System”, the conference discussed the possible ways to innovative cooperation between the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and Southeast Asian countries and regions during the epidemic period.

Wang Enke, president of SCNU addresses the audiences

As one of the forum hosts, SCNU attaches great importance to international cooperation in the Southeast Asian region. Wang Enke, president of SCNU, addressed the audience with a welcome speech. “As a key university in the GBA, SCNU will spare no effort to make contributions to the promotion of education, communication and cooperation in the Southeast Asian region in the future.” Since the founding of the Research Bases of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies in 2017, SCNU has set up seven overseas research bases in cooperation with six Southeast Asian countries and will establish more in the future.

The welcome speech kicked off the forum, where speakers shared their views on economic and trade exchange after the epidemic, educational and cultural exchange between China and Southeast Asian countries, industrial application of scientific and technological achievements of first-class universities, and so on.

Dr. Rethy Kieth Chhem, the Cambodian Secretary of State for the Ministry of Industry, Science and Technology and Innovation emphasized Cambodia's eagerness to cooperate with China to gain experience through University-Industry cooperation, public-private enterprises collaboration and cooperation among governments which could boost the economic development of each.

The forum featured a series of seminars covering topics on optimization of personnel training and transformation of scientific research in national and regional research institutions, as well as the discipline development of national and regional research. Besides, the construction of the Belt and Road initiative, and cooperation between China and other Southeast Asian countries against the background of pandemic were also topics of discussion.

After listening to the seminar, Chen Shimeng, a first-year graduate student at the School of Foreign Studies, said “Collaboration and integration will bring more resources as well as challenges to students, especially to those who want to be teachers in the future.” They should improve themselves to adapt to a situation in which integration of research and production are significant, and eventually become qualified teachers.

While humanity has been confronted with the outbreak of COVID-19, the conference has strengthened the interaction between the Greater Bay Area and Southeast Asian countries. They will all benefit from the further development and cooperation of China - ASEAN in the aspects of international exchange in the future.

This year's opening ceremony was broadcast live to a global audience while providing bilingual English - Chinese simultaneous interpretation. More than 2,500 experts, scholars, and postgraduate students attended this seminar. Participants came from China, including Hong Kong and Macao, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar, Brunei and the Philippines, among other Southeast Asian countries and regions.
