Since the launch of Discipline Promotion Plan and ESI Incentives in 2018, special funds have been allocated to support teachers to conduct scientific research and  further discipline development. Over the past two years, SCNU has witnessed  the publication of a number of high quality papers and remarkable results in terms of scale and strength of ESI rankings, which can be shown in the following four aspects:

  1. Continuous rise in ESI general rankings. According to the statistics from ESI recently, SCNU ranked 1,135 globally in July 2020, up 44 places from July 2018.

  2. Increasing disciplines ranked on the list. There are now six disciplines which rank among the top 1% of ESI, one more compared with that in 2018. The total number of listed disciplines ranks fourth among all Teacher Training Universities in China.

  3. Rising strength of overall disciplines. The past two years have witnessed a steady growth of all disciplines on ESI ranking list. Progress has been achieved in terms of both quality and quantity. Apart from Chemistry, three other new disciplines, including Engineering, Materials Science and Mathematics have been added to ESI top 5%. In addition to Environmental Science and Ecology, the remaining five top 1% disciplines all scored higher rankings. Material Science increased its place by 17.8 percentage points, Engineering 16.5 percentage points, Botany and Zoology 14.5 percentage points, Mathematics 6.7 percentage points and Chemistry 6.2 percentage points. The general ranking of all disciplines increased by an average of 12.3 percentage points, significantly higher than that of other school’s disciplines on the list.

  4. More potential disciplines emerging on the list. In July 2018, 2 disciplines were listed as potential by ESI, leading 80% of its candidate. In July 2020, the potential disciplines increased to 3, among which the rate of Social Sciences was 101.44%, Physics 96.34%, and Psychiatry and Psychology 90.96%, all showing huge room for future development.
