From November 18 to 22, Dr. Suzy Hatough, expert in quality certification for Tourism Education and vice president for the Middle East region of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), came to our school to conduct a field evaluation and audit for three undergraduate majors, namely tourism management, hotel management and MICE management (i.e. meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) under the School of Tourism Management.

The UNWTO-Tedqual certification is a program launched by the UNWTO Themis Foundation whose main objective is to improve the quality of the tourism education, training and research programmes and help implement the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism. Being widely accepted and recognized across the globe, this certification system guarantees standardization, quality and internationalization of tourism education. This certification is indicative of a leading status for tourism education institutions around the world.
In 2018, the School of Tourism Management began on its certification process by sending a written request to UNWTO-TedQual. In June, 2019, the Tedqual Certification Committee accepted the interim certification application request and arranded for the audit, which took place lately.

During the visit, Dr. Suzy Hatough conducted in-depth exchange with all leaders and faculty members from the School of Tourism Management. She also paid a field visit to our canteen at the University Town campus, the psychiatric counseling center, the employment guidance center, the library, teaching building, labs and other teaching support facilities. What’s more, Dr. Suzy Hatough attended select classes, studied the curriculum materials with attention to detailed manner and held five meetings with all representatives from the academy, local enterprises and the public sector.

Dr. Suzy Hatough also carried out a field investigation to enterprises where students have internships, and reviewed their performance. This international certification audit coincided with our school’s Entrepreneurship and Innovation week. Hence, she participated in several other activities as well, and afterwards gave a comprehensive, systematic and in-depth feedback.

During the feedback meeting. Dr. Suzy Hatough thanked all faculty members for their persistent efforts in organizing this audit, praised the achievements of the School of Tourism Management, and offered constructive opinions and suggestions that will help us forge ahead even further. The final certification results will be announced in the first half of 2020, next year.
