The Agricultural and Rural Department of Guangdong Province has released a list of 20 new species and technological innovations in the fish and shrimp industry in Guangdong Province in the first quarter of 2019. Carassius auratus Var. Pengzenensis ♀ × Cyprinus acutidorsalis Wang ♂ ranked first in the promotion of new varieties and new technologies. It is cultivated by a team led by Professor Zhao Jun of SCNU and jointly promoted by the Pearl River Fisheries Research Institute and the Foshan Sanshui Platinum Aquatic Seedling Company.

This new species was approved by the National Aquaculture and Seed Certification Committee in 2016, and has been identified as the main promoted variety of aquatic products in Guangdong province for four consecutive years (2016 - 2019).

The successful cultivation and promotion of this species fully demonstrates the breakthroughs made by the School of Life Sciences in fundamental research and applied aquatic science, yielding significant achievements serving social and economic development, and contributing to the development of first-class disciplines and a high-level university.
