On November 23 in Latvia, on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, State Secretary Andris Pelšs awarded the Latvian and Chinese directors of the Confucius Institute at the University of Latvia, respectively Professor Peteris Pildegovics, and Professor Shang Quanyu, with the Certificate of Commendation or "Special Contribution Award" in honor of their contributions to the development of Sinology in the fields of politics, economy and culture.
A press conference on the occasion of the presentation of the electronic version of the Big Chinese-Latvian Dictionary and the Latvian- Chinese Chinese-Latvian Dictionary as well as the celebration of eightieth birthday of Professor Peteris Pildegovics, famous sinologist and director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Latvia, were jointly hosted by the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Chinese Embassy in Latvia, the University of Latvia and the Confucius Institute at University of Latvia.
"Since this year marks the 100th anniversary of Latvia's independence, and I am also celebrating my 80th birthday, the publication of the electronic version of the Chinese-Latvian Dictionary is a special gift to me" Professor Pildegovics said at the press conference.
Sun Ying, charge d'affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Latvia, said that Latvia's "China Craze" and "Mandarin fever" have increased in recent years, and Sino-Latvian cultural exchanges have become more frequent. He believes that with promotion and joint efforts promotion of friendly people from both sides exchanges and cooperation between China and Latvia will open a new chapter.
The Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and South China Normal University, its partner school in China, sent congratulatory letters respectively. They thanked Professor Peteris Pildegovics for his help in the establishment of the Confucius Institute in Latvia, his contribution to the development of Chinese teaching in Latvia and his efforts promoting the deepening of the friendship between the peoples of the two countries.
