School of International Culture, South China Normal University

This course is set for those whose native language is not Chinese or overseas Chinese and designed for those who wish to become international Chinese teachers. The object is to train students to be skillful in teaching Chinese as a foreign language and equipped students with the cross-cultural ability. Graduation certificates will be issued when students have fulfilled the stipulated curriculum, acquired enough credits and completed the thesis. Students who satisfy the relevant requirements will be conferred upon the M.A. degree.

一、General requirements

1. Target Group: Non-Chinese citizens holding valid foreign ordinary passports

2. Age requirement: 18-55 years old (Scholarship applicants must meet the age requirements of each program)

3. Physical Condition: In good health, meets the health examination standards of applying for a student visa or residence permit in China.

4. Moral cultivation: The applicant should be friendly to China, honest, respects the customs of Chinese people and has no records of violation on Chinese law, school rules, public security punishment or crimination.

5. Financial Condition:In good financial situation, be able to pay 4 years tuition, accommodation and related daily living expenses.

二、Application Documents

1. Applicants shall be Bachelor’s degree holders.

2. Diploma of final education or Pre-Graduating Certificate, original or notarized version, in notarized Chinese or English Translation.

3. Full transcripts of final education, original or notarized version, in notarized Chinese or English Translation.

4. Valid HSK test report (HSK 5 score 180 or above)

5. Two recommendation letters in Chinese or English from professor or associate professor in the graduated university or college.

6. Study Plan in Chinese (including personal understanding of the major, academic research experience and results, research proposal, and etc., about 800 words).

7. Passport copy (valid for more than 6 months).

8. All Visa copy (if available).

9. A color photo, taken recently within the last 6 months. (same as the one on the passport.)

四、Curriculum

1. Program Duration: 2 years

2. In this course settings, practical application is the guide and training international Chinese teachers is the goal. Therefore, the courses will focus on training Chinese teaching skills, abilities of introducing Chinese culture and cross-cultural communication skills. The curriculum will focus on core courses mentioned above, and equipped with several modules.

3. Main courses: Second language acquisition, Case analysis and practice in classroom teaching, Cross-culture communication, A comparison between Chinese and other languages and Chinese teaching, Psychology of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, Chinese culture and arts, Modern Educational Technology, Lectures on linguistics, culture and education, etc.

七、Costs

1. Registration fee: 420 CNY (non-refundable and non-transferable)

2. Tuition fee: 29,000 CNY/year

3. Insurance: 3 options available: 800CNY/year, 1,000CNY/year and 1,200CNY/year

八、Scholarship

1. Chinese Government Scholarship (Full scholarship): Under 35 years old with a minimum score of 180 on the HSK Test (Level 5). Applicants who meet the eligibility criteria can directly apply to their home country’s student exchange office or the Education Section of the Chinese Embassy or Consulate (Consulate General) in their host country. The application period generally lasts from January to April each year, and application procedures and deadlines vary in different countries; please consult in advance. For more details, visit the Chinese Government Scholarship Application System ( https://campuschina.org ). Create personal account, select Project Type A, and submit the material as requested.

2. International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship (Full scholarship): Age of 35 or under; A minimum score of 210 on the HSK Test (Level 5), and 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level); Be interested in Chinese language education and related work. For more details, please visit http://www.chinese.cn.

3. Guangdong Government Outstanding Foreign Student Scholarship: 20,000 CNY, for the age of 35 or under and self- sponsored students who have admitted by SCNU. Application time is usually from April to July. Students are selected on the basis of merit.

九、 Application Procedure and Warm Tips

To ensure that you successfully complete your application for admission, the application process norms are explained as follows. Please read carefully and follow the order.

Go to http://istudy.scnu.edu.cn, create an individual account

Fill in personal information online, upload all documents as required and  

submit application form completely

                ↓(About 1-2 weeks for initial review)

After passing the initial review, an email will be sent to pay the registration fee

↓ (About 2weeks)

After confirming the reception of registration fee, school will schedule an interview

                        ↓ (About 1-2weeks)

After passing the interview, school will process the application of JW202

            ↓ (About 3-4 weeks)

Admission Notice and JW202 will be released to the applicant

                   ↓

Go to local Chinese embassy and consulates to apply for student visa

Register on time at SCNU

Tips:

1. Please upload all required documents to process the whole procedure. Each document must be less than 1M.

2. Certificates, diplomas and transcripts must be notarized copies. All documents must be translated into Chinese or English.

3. The transfer application will not be accepted after two weeks of starting of school.

4. Please upload valid passport and visa page, transcripts, attendance (above 80%) and transfer certificate, entry and exit records if you have been studied in any school in China.

5. International students from some countries are required to submit the resume and notarized non-criminal certification. The specific requirements will be notified by email.

6. Those under the age of 18 who apply for a degree or long-term education must have a guardian of Chinese nationality. The guardian's certificate must be notarized. The specific requirements will be notified by email.

7. Applicants must promise that all information filled and materials uploaded on the “South China Normal University International Student Online Service Platform” are accurate, truthful, legal, and valid. Once submitted, they cannot be modified. If the materials contain information that is false, fake or misleading, applicants will be disqualified and bear relevant responsibilities.
